CUP FINALS HELD AT
Burscough FC Ground, Victoria Park, Mart Lane, Burscough.
UNDER 14’S LEAGUE CUP- 14/4/10
BLACKPOOL 3 V THE FILLIES 2
On a beautiful spring evening, the West Lancashire girl’s football league cup finals commenced at Victoria Park, Burscough FC’s ground. The under 14’s arrived and there was a wonderful atmosphere, girls were heard to state that they felt like professionals. The game got under way and Blackpool settled quickly and Alix Reid scored within the first five minutes. Blackpool maintained their dominance for much of the first half with 2 further goals being scored in the 20th and 25th minutes by Katie Brannigan and another from Alix Reid. Then the Fillies supporters lifted their team with the help of a drum and football chants. This had the desired effect and in the last five minutes of the first half the Fillies players showed true grit and determination and had more of the play.
To coin a phrase, this game really was a game of two halves!!! The Fillies dominated the second half with numerous shots, which eventually paid off with goals in the 20th and 22nd minutes both being credited to Rachael Byrne. This was a great come back which provided excitement for the spectators, but Blackpool managed to maintain their lead.
This game was played with a great spirit between these two teams which was a testimony to girl’s football.
UNDER 13’S LEAGUE CUP- 14/4/10
PRESTON NE 1 V BURNLEY 2
These two teams rose to the occasion of a final and some impressive football was enjoyed by the spectators. The passing and skills on show were a credit to the girls and their managers and coaches. Both teams had chances on goal, but it was Laura Dewhurst from Burnley who opened the scoring in the 20th minute of the first half with a superb strike.
Preston showed determination and a will to win this final and they pressed further in the second half with a well deserved equaliser being realised by Abigail Wignall, around the 20th minute. The game looked set to go to extra time with both teams having opportunities, however in the 26th minute Millie Shaw from Burnley scored the decider for Burnley to take the cup.
Under 16's League Cup Final - 19th April 2010
Crosby Stuart Ladies 2 Burscough 1
A late Crosby Stuart Ladies comeback saw them clinch the League Cup in the very last minute after trailing for almost the entire game to a gallant Burscough side.
Playing at their adult side's home ground, the Greens made the brighter start and Jodie Talbott used her pace to take advantage of a defensive mix-up and prod the ball home. Both teams had chances to score in the first half and both goalkeepers were on fine form.
The second half saw Crosby up their game and they put Burscough under an awful lot of pressure, but a combination of the Greens' defence and fantastic goalkeeping from Jessica Linford frustrated Crosby, and it looked like it was not to be their day. However, five minutes from time Laura Hart raced through to score a fine effort and level the scores. With extra-time looming, Foat and Nickson combined to give Laura Hart the opportunity to win the game at the death.
An outstanding match played between two superb teams, in the correct spirit throughout
U15s League Cup Final- 19th Apri
Bolton Wanderers 1 Mersey Girls 2 (AET)
It was the Lilywhites who started the stronger and they opened the scoring after 19 minutes with a fine strike by Emma Knee. Mersey Girls gradually got more of a foothold in the game and they equalised with a long-range strike from Bradley after 32 minutes. The second half was goalless and this led to extra-time being played.
In the additional twenty minutes, Mersey Girls had more possession but as in normal time, found the committed Bolton team difficult to break down. As time went on, Bolton looked more and more dangerous on the break. In the end, though, it was a great ball in from a corner which Bolton were unable to clear, and eventually it was headed in by Bradley to win a dramatic cup final tie.
U10s League Cup Final- 21st April 2010
Euxton Girls 0 Wigan Athletic 8
Despite a fantastic effort by Euxton, and a player of the match performance from their goalkeeper, Katherine Ormerod, Wigan put on a fantastic display of football to win the cup. Charlotte Newsham led the scoring with a hat-trick, while Katie Evans netted a fine brace. Other goals came from Leah Foster and Olivia Baybutt.
Under 11's League Cup Final- 21st April 2010
Bury Girls 0 Blackpool 6
A four-goal salvo from Natasha Fenton fired Blackpool to League Cup success against a hard-working and talented Bury side, who can consider themselves unlucky not to have scored at least a couple of goals but were thwarted by some top-drawer goalkeeping.
The Seasiders scored three in each half, with Fenton scoring a brace in each period (13, 20, 28 and 45 mins) with Hannah Wright (16 mins) and Karis Harrison (48 mins) completing the scoring.
Under 12's League Cup Final-21st April 2010
Crosby Stuart Ladies 0 Blackpool 2
This tense final between the Champions of the West and North divisions was decided by a goal in each half which saw the Tangerines home. Sammy Lee opened the scoring in the first half with a fine finish after Crosby 'keeper Anna O'Gara had made a fine double save.
Crosby did everything they could to get back into the game but in the end were undone on the break with a fine Demi Devereux effort, which secured the cup for Blackpool.
Under 12's West Challenge Cup - 27th April 2010
Birkdale Diamonds 1 Crosby Stuart Ladies 4
Crosby secured the West League and Cup double with a fine win, but had the overcome a spirited challenge from League Runners-Up Birkdale Diamonds in a match which was probably closer than the scoreline suggests.
Birkdale came out the stronger and pushed Crosby back, but the Champions gradually asserted their authority on the game, opening the scoring with a low effort from distance by Megan Strefford on 12 minutes. Birkdale were stunned by this and before long they were two goals down, a corner was only cleared to the edge of the area and Ellie Ralston fired in a low, accurate shot on 15 minutes. Just before half-time, Crosby seemed to have killed the game after a fast break which saw Megan Howard net accurately with 24 minutes gone.
To their credit, Birkdale came out firing in the second half and put Crosby under a lot of pressure. They got the goal their play had deserved when a ball was not properly cleared and Grace Cunliffe fired a half-volley in with 42 minutes gone to give the Blues hope. However, Crosby took the opportunity to hit their opponents on the break, and Autumn McCartney scored an excellent goal on 47 minutes to seal the cup for Crosby, in a match which was played in an outstanding spirit between the two teams.
Under 12's North Challenge Cup
Blackpool 2 Mill Hill 1
Emma Hickson scored her second goal in the final minute to give Blackpool the treble against an impressive Mill Hill side.
The opening stages were quite even, but gradually Blackpool asserted their authority on the game, and they got the goal that their play had deserved when Hickson fired in after 17 minutes. It could have been worse for Mill Hill as Blackpool squandered a number of presentable chances to increase their lead before half-time.
The second half was a different story, as Mill Hill were in the ascendancy but found the Seasiders' defence a tough nut to crack. However, with just three minutes to go they found a way through, as a long shot from Naomi Fielding took a deflection which gave the Blackpool 'keeper no chance.
It looked as though Mill Hill had done enough to take the game through to extra-time which they would have deserved, but Blackpool had other ideas and sealed the game with a goal of stunning quality. A Tangerine corner was cleared out to Jasmine Singleton, and the centre-half delivered a stunning cross of which David Beckham would have been proud. It was right onto the head of Hickson who applied the finish to prompt wild celebrations for the treble winners.
Under 10 's Challenge Cup- 28th April 2010
Bolton Community 0 Wigan Athletic 4
Wigan completed a superb treble with a hard-fought victory over League Runners-Up Bolton. Goals came from Leah Foster, Katie Evans, Nadia Hosker-Moore and Charlotte Newsham, to put the crown on an excellent season for the Latics.
Under 11's North Challenge Cup
Natasha Fenton added another five goals to her four in the other final as Blackpool made it a cup double against a gallant Mill Hill side. Natasha Marshall also scored for the Seasiders, who have the chance to make it a treble if they get a point from one of their last two games.
Under 11's West Challenge Cup
The Fillies 3 Athletico Girls 0
The Fillies secured the League and Cup double with an excellent win over a hard-working and enthusiastic Athletico Girls side in an electric atmosphere. Fillies took the lead in the first half with a fantastic Emma Partner strike, in which she ran from her own half down the right before hitting an unstoppable shot into the top corner. They looked to add to their lead, but in particular found Lauren Uttermark in the Athletico goal to be in inspired form, which meant that the difference was only a single goal at the interval.
Athletico looked to push on in the second half, but as they did they were caught twice on the break by a pair of brilliant individual efforts from Demi Moss. Athletico were unlucky not to at least notch a consolation, but Chloe Jackson in the Fillies goal proved equal to the task. This was a great final played in the perfect sporting spirit.
