NEXT FUN DAY FOR U9'S WILL BE 28th MARCH 2010

23RD JANUARY 2010

One of the largest football leagues in the country dedicated to female football has continued it's commitment to developing the sport amongst the youngest and newest participants.

Ten Under 9 and five Under 10 teams took part in the seventh Fun Day organised by the West Lancashire Girls League. Like a number of previous events, this took place at the Soccer dome in Wigan and involved teams playing in three groups but with no results recorded, all teams playing for fun and every player receiving a gift of a skills football at the end of the afternoon.

These events have been organised in conjunction with the Lancashire FA's initiative to introduce non-competitive football for players in their first few years of football. The West Lancashire Girls League have organised such events for Under 9's for a number of years now, but this was the first time the Under 10's have been included, in line with the proposals recently put forward at County level. The Under 10's are currently playing in a competitive division, which meant some players, parents and coaches found it initially difficult to come to terms with the more friendly nature of the event.

Clubs came from right across the region to participate, including Aspull, Birkdale United, Bolton Community, Burnley, Burscough, Bury, Dynamo Rangers, Euxton Girls, Fillies, TMS and Wigan Athletic.

The friendly atmosphere was enhanced by referees who volunteered their services for free, namely Adam Fairclough, Mike Edwards and League Vice-Chair, Noel Warham. All three officials encouraged the players throughout the afternoon and were asked to pick a 'Player of the Day' from each of their groups, who received a medal to go along with their new football. These were Jade McLaughlin from Bolton Community, Lara Miller from Bury Girls and Evie Barclay from Euxton Girls.

League Secretary Julie Edwards said, 'Events like this are the most rewarding and enjoyable of our league calendar. The girls can come and play in a safe, secure environment without competition being enforced, while gaining that necessary experience of playing against other teams which they often find difficult. We are grateful to our volunteers, the League Committee and our sponsors for their continued support. We would also like to thank all the players, coaches and parents for their positive contribution to this and previous Festivals.

The West Lancashire Girls League will be holding further similar events throughout the year. For further information please contact Julie Edwards by e-mail: julie@wlgfl.co.uk

Jan 09 - Fun Day

November 2008 - U9s Fun Day                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   The West Lancs Girls League have just completed a very well organised football fun event, which took place at the Wigan Soccer dome, some of the girls had never had the opportunity to play football matches before.

The event was to highlight the void in under 9s girls football within the Merseyside and Lancashire area with a total of ten clubs and seventy girls taking part. A big thank you to the clubs that took part Aspull Girls, Birkdale United, Burnley FC, Bury Girls, Burscough JFC, Dynamo Rangers, Euxton Girls, Litherland Ladies, Mill Hill FC and TMS.

There were no winners or loses with all the girls receiving a medal and goodie bag.

The West Lancs girls league would like to thank the Lancashire FA, The Fillies and Mr F Pilling for their kind donations towards the goodie bags and a big thanks to the two referee’s Jenny Webster and Samantha Edwards.

The Wigan Dome was used due to being the only facilities within the area available however did cost each club £20.00, we are looking to sponsors to make this a monthly event until the good weather returns and the girls can play out doors.

The League will hold the next fun day in January (date to be confirmed) which will be advertised on the website at www.wlgfl.co.uk so if any teams interested keep a look out, it would be nice to see more new names taking part.

This fun event will be open to clubs across Merseyside and Lancashire and hopefully the two County FA’s covering the clubs and areas will help in costs and advertisement to bring more girls in at grass root levels to enjoy, get fit and socialise.
